Block Remains in Serious Condition
Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block remained in serious condition at USC University Hospital on Wednesday, two days after doctors removed a blood clot the size of a golf ball from his brain.
Block is still not able to speak, according to a source close to the case, but that is to be expected after such rigorous surgery and the pressure of the blood clot on his brain.
During the surgery, doctors removed 90% of the clot, which was lodged deep in the sheriff’s brain, and did not report finding damaged tissue in the area around it, another source said.
Meanwhile, Undersheriff Jerry Harper, who had taken a leave of absence to work on Block’s campaign and attend to personal matters, returned to the job Tuesday and is running the department.
Harper on Wednesday reiterated his plan to retire in December or January.
