ABC Holds Saturday Morning Kids Lead

Share

ABC holds a narrow lead over Fox in the Saturday morning children’s programming race this season, while CBS’ new lineup of animated fare has produced significant gains for that network.

Relying on programs from its parent, the Walt Disney Co., ABC scored season-high ratings last Saturday, led by its “One Saturday Morning” animated block, which includes the shows “Doug,” “Recess” and “Pepper Ann.”

About 1.4 million children between the ages of 2 and 11 tuned in ABC, compared to 1.2 million watching Fox, according to figures released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research.

ABC’s lead is much narrower for the season, at about 30,000 viewers.

CBS introduced an entirely new children’s lineup in early October and has generated some improvement, up 25% compared to the corresponding week a year ago. But the network, which drew 390,000 kids last Saturday, still ranks well behind ABC and Fox as well as the third-place WB network, at 500,000. NBC targets teenagers rather than young children with its lineup.
