Deputies to Hold Benefit to Buy Toys for Children

A group of Latino recording artists will perform Sunday during a music festival to raise funds to buy Christmas toys for needy children, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

Proceeds from Festival of Stars for Kids at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena will be used to fund the annual sheriff’s toy drive, which distributes toys for children at 100 community centers, Deputy Elsa Avila said.

Last year’s drive raised more than $400,000, but this year with the help of Spanish radio station Noticias (930 AM), co-sponsor of the festival, the goal is to acquire toys and clothing for 50,000 children, Avila said.

Local acts like Banda Indomable and Mariachi Juvenil Tenochtitlan will share the stage with such performers as dancer-violinist Olga Breeskin, legendary mariachi singer Tito Guizar and the Banda Vallarta, Avila said.

The festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 11003 Rooks Road in Pico Rivera. Admission is $10 or a new, unwrapped toy of the same value. Children under 10 are admitted free.
