Money Approved for Holiday Decorations

For the first time, city officials have agreed to get into the holiday spirit by contributing money for yuletide decorations at Villa Park’s only shopping center.

The City Council has agreed to match the $10,450 committed by owners of the shopping center, which is next to City Hall.

Council members Bob Bell and Patricia L. Bortle voted against spending the city money.

“I don’t approve spending city money on decorations--I think the money could be used in a better way,” Bortle said after the vote.

But Councilman Barry L. Denes said he decided to support the expenditure after the city contacted two manufacturers of decorations and received cost proposals. Denes added that after property owners pledged money, he was convinced it was a good idea.

“Decorations are not only good for the residents, but will also help the merchants,” Denes said. “Once the displays are up and lit, [residents] won’t know how they ever lived without it.”

Mayor Rich Freschi, who is organizing the holiday project, said the decorations will help create a hometown atmosphere for a festival set for Dec. 6.

That event, planned to include people of all faiths, will feature an inland yacht parade and activities at the center. There is a $10 entry fee for the boat parade.

The city will buy the decorations and reuse them each year.

“It should be a visual treat,” Denes said.
