The U.S. Jewish population as of 1997 was an estimated 6,005,000, according to the 1998 edition of the American Jewish Yearbook. The figure is an increase of 100,000 from the previous year and means Jews account for 2.3% of the population.

The yearbook, published by the American Jewish Committee, based the estimate on city-by-city data from Jewish federations, rabbis and community leaders.

The book says the largest concentrations of Jews are in New York and northern New Jersey, 1.969 million; the Los Angeles area, 631,000; and Miami-Fort Lauderdale, 354,000.
