Man Assaulted 2 Years Ago Is Attacked Again

A man who was bludgeoned and robbed outside his Ventura auto shop nearly two years ago has been attacked again, this time while sleeping at his Oxnard home, police said Friday.

Robert Schockow, 62, was struck on the head early Friday inside a house on the 300 block of Harvard Street, Oxnard Police Sgt. Lee Wilcox said.

Schockow, who owns Bob’s Garage on East Thompson Boulevard in Ventura, didn’t wake up during the beating and Wilcox said he didn’t know if Schockow had been knocked unconscious.

About 2:45 a.m., Schockow woke to use the bathroom and discovered he was bleeding profusely, police said. He was found in the bathroom by a family member, who called authorities.

Schockow was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and later transferred to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Friday night, police said.

The single-story home showed no signs of forced entry and nothing was stolen, Wilcox said, adding that a door may have been left unlocked. Officers told the family a flashlight was the likely weapon.

The windows on Schockow’s Jaguar, which was parked in front of the family home, were shattered, said Richard Ellis, his mother’s fiance.

“Somebody’s out to get Bob,” Ellis said.

Schockow lives with his girlfriend, Kathy Aker, her 19-year-old son, Jaime, his mother, Esther, and her fiance.. All four slept through the attack.

However, one of them did name a possible suspect, Wilcox said. He would not elaborate.

In late December 1996, Schockow was bludgeoned in a parking lot behind his business and several thousand dollars was stolen from his wallet. The attack left him with permanent eye damage.

Before the 1996 attack, Schockow told his employees he had received death threats at home.

Although the 1996 incident remains unsolved, the attacks do not appear to be related because nothing was stolen in Friday’s attack, family friends said.
