DESHLER, Neb. —
A 76-year-old man accused of shooting his cancer-stricken wife to death as she lay suffering in the hospital was briefly released from jail Friday to attend her funeral.
Clutching the hands of his sons, Vernal “Bob” Ohlrich followed his wife’s coffin into St. Peter Lutheran Church, where Phyllis Ohlrich, a 74-year-old Sunday school teacher, once sang in the choir.
Ohlrich’s wife was shot once in the head Tuesday. The shooter then laid the pistol on the counter at the nurses’ station, police said.
