5,000 Jobs Available at Employment Fair

Looking for work? Employers who need to fill about 5,000 positions will be interviewing prospective workers at the Sept. 12 Community Job Fair at Fallbrook Mall.

Despite a low unemployment rate, about 20,000 job-seekers attended the fair last year, said Pamela Collins, regional administrator for the San Fernando Valley GAIN Region.

This year, the fair is expected to draw a comparable crowd.

“There are those who come to seek their first jobs and others coming to see what’s out there in terms of getting that better job,” she said.

Representatives from Macy’s, Time Warner Communications, Circuit City and other companies will be on hand for one-on-one interviews at the second annual event, sponsored by the Canoga Park-West Hills Chamber of Commerce in association with the county Department of Public Social Services’ San Fernando Valley GAIN Region.

Government agencies such as the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Census Bureau and the FBI will also be looking for employees, said Collins.

Job-hunters are asked to dress as if for a job interview and bring a resume, Collins said. The fair will also offer sessions on how to prepare for interviews, she added.

West Valley Smart Shuttle will provide free transportation to the fair site from Shuttle Stop at the following locations and times: the Roscoe-Van Nuys stop at 10 and 11:30 a.m.; the Nordhoff-Lindley stop at 10:15 and 11:45 a.m.; the Reseda-Hart stop at 10:24 and 11:54 a.m.; the Victory-Winnetka stop at 10:32 a.m. and 12:02 p.m.; the Vanowen-Independence stop at 10:37 a.m. and 12:05 p.m.; and the Canoga Park-Nordhoff stop at 10:47 a.m. and 12:17 p.m.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fallbrook Mall, 6633 Fallbrook Ave., West Hills, between Victory Boulevard and Vanowen Street.
