Arts Dean at Golden West Honored for Compositions

David F. Anthony, dean of Fine and Performing Arts at Golden West College, was recognized by his peers with a national composing award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

The New York-based group acknowledged Anthony’s scoring for two educational documentaries, “Biology: Cycles of Life” and “Mediawaves,” a 26-part series on the history of communication.

Anthony also received a $500 grant with the award.

“We are delighted to join Golden West College in supporting the growth and development of our nation’s musical future,” said Marilyn Bergman, president and chairman of the association.

Anthony was chosen by a panel of musical experts, including music critics, teachers and professional musicians.

The dean, who is founding executive director of Pacific Coast Civic Light Opera, said he is just glad somebody is listening to his compositions.

“What I do is such a niche in the industry that just to be recognized is a big thrill,” he said. “Only if it is done really well does anybody notice at all.”

Anthony also was awarded the Los Angeles-area Emmy last year for the biology series.

Golden West President Kenneth Yglesias said Anthony’s talent is a tremendous boon to the school.
