Border Patrol Captures Youth Facility Escapee

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

One of three teens who escaped from the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility in Camarillo more than a month ago was arrested Thursday morning at the Mexican border while trying to cross into California, officials said.

Victorville resident Andrew Marass, 19, was taken into custody after showing U.S. Border Patrol agents fake identification, said Chuck Kubasek, assistant superintendent of the state detention center.

Agents identified Marass using a photograph and fingerprints they had been given by detention officials. A warrant had been issued for Marass’ arrest after he and two others escaped July 23.

Federal officials transported the teen to San Diego County Jail, where he remained without bail Thursday night.

The border crossing location, Marass’ intended destination and whether he was walking or in a vehicle was not immediately known.

“We’re certain he wasn’t with our two other escapees,” Kubasek said. “And he hasn’t given any other information about the others.”

Randy Garret Lynch of Fresno and Carlos Reyes of Los Angeles, both 19, remained at large Thursday. Both are believed to be in Mexico and both are considered dangerous.

Marass will be transported to Ventura today or early next week, where he faces a felony escape charge. If convicted, he will not return to a youth facility but instead will face up to three years in state prison.

Prior to escaping, Marass was set to be released from the juvenile facility at the end of next year after serving time for robbery.
