Ship to Fill a Tall Order for Visitors
The majestic Pilgrim ship will be on display today at Channel Islands Harbor.
The tall ship, based in Dana Point, will be open free to the public.

Book author--A story Saturday incorrectly reported the author of “Two Years Before the Mast.” The book is by Richard Henry Dana.
The deck of the two-masted ship is 130 feet long with 14 sails. The replica of the 1825 trading brig helps teach visitors about America’s lucrative fur and cattle trade industry before the turn of the century.
The ship was first made famous by the classic book, “Two Years Before the Mast,” in which Richard Henry Davis wrote of his adventures as a seaman aboard the Pilgrim.
The original ship, which cost $50,000 to build, was only 90 feet long. It was considered to be fast in comparison to other vessels, which averaged 110 feet.
The original Pilgrim sailed from Boston carrying hides and manufactured goods to ports along the California coast.
The replica, built in 1945, was recently restored after encountering problems with a bending keel and wood rot.
The arrival of the Pilgrim will promote the proposed Marina Institute, a school that will teach about the fishing and harbor industry.
Free tours will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Whale’s Tail dock at Channel Islands Harbor on Victoria Avenue. For more information, call (805) 985-4852.
