Gays Protest Stance of Anglican Bishops
About 50 gay men and lesbians showed up at Christ Church in Greenwich, Conn., for a silent demonstration during an appearance by the archbishop of Canterbury.
They were among 800 worshipers at the Sunday service and wore pink triangles to protest the overwhelming vote last month by the world’s Anglican bishops that denounced homosexuality as contrary to Christian morals.
Archbishop of Canterbury George L. Carey is primate of the Church of England and spiritual leader of the 70-million-member worldwide Anglican Communion, which includes the Episcopal Church in the United States.
The pink triangle was a symbol used originally by the Nazis to identify homosexuals.
Carey and his wife, Eileen, were vacationing in the United States and took time to thank the affluent Connecticut congregation for its support of the Anglican international ministry.
