The challenge figures to come more in the mind-set than in the opponent Saturday, when UCLA plays at Houston against a Cougar team that is 0-2, has scored only 17 points and will be a huge underdog.

“You’ve got to be careful,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “You can fall into a trap if you’re not ready. That’s what I constantly remind them.”

He isn’t the only one.

“I just remind them of us,” quarterback Cade McNown said when asked what he will say to teammates about not looking too long at Houston’s numbers. “We were 0-2 [last season] and came out and put up 66 [points in the third game]. We won’t be looking past Houston. I know they’ve got some real talented athletes.”

The Bruins are concerned about the availability of Michael Wiley, one of their starting outside linebackers, because of a persistent back problem. Santi Hall will move to the opening lineup if Wiley is unable to play. . . . Backup tailback Keith Brown is day-to-day because of turf toe on his right foot, meaning touted freshman DeShaun Foster could move up to second string against Houston. . . . Jeff Grau, a walk-on long snapper, played against Texas, making it five true freshmen who got in for the Bruins, not four as previously reported.
