Gillis Wins Race, Leads Irvine to Cross-Country Meet Title

UC Irvine freshman Lisa Gillis was the individual champion with a time of 17 minutes 51 seconds to lead the Anteater women to victory in the Big West cross-country meet Saturday at the 5,000-meter Lagoon Course at UC Santa Barbara.

The Anteaters, who had four runners place among the top six, finished with 26 points. UC Santa Barbara was second with 45, and Cal Poly SLO third with 78.

Irvine’s Allyson Kulak was fourth (18:13.6), Jamie Vaicaro fifth (18:22.4), and Kareen Nilsson sixth (18:24.9).

Santa Barbara’s Brett Strahan was the men’s individual champion with a time of 25:12.3 over 8,000 meters. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo won the men’s team title.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Fresno Pacific 6, Pacific Christian 1--Edgardo Contrevas scored four goals and Jarrod Souza had two for Fresno Pacific.

Westmont 2, Southern California College 1--Aaron Grillo scored the only goal for Southern California College (5-6-0).

In nonconference men’s soccer:

UC Irvine 9, Concordia 0--Irvine (5-3) broke school records for most goals, largest margin of victory, most corner kicks and junior Tyler Theslof tied the school record for most points in a game.

Theslof had two goals and four assists.

Irvine’s previous record for most goals was eight against Loyola Marymount in 1988.

The Anteaters had 14 corner kicks, which broke the school record of nine, set Friday against CS Northridge.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Asha Wagner had 13 kills to lead San Luis Obispo (12-1, 2-0), which defeated Fullerton, 15-6, 15-9, 15-6.

UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--Fourth-ranked Santa Barbara defeated host Irvine, 15-7, 15-7, 15-8.

Larissa Carter had 13 kills to lead the Anteaters (3-12, 0-2).

In nonconference men’s water polo:

Chapman 8, Occidental 7--Jeremy Spriggs scored with 38 seconds left in regulation to lift Chapman. Chapman’s Robert Dubuisson blocked three shots in the final 15 seconds of the game.

UC Irvine 16, Loyola Marymount 6--Ryan Bailey scored five goals for sixth-ranked UC Irvine (4-3) to bring his total to 28 this season. Shawn Maiden scored three goals for visiting Loyola Marymount (5-5).
