Edison Grant to Send Students to Ballet

Share

A grant from the parent company of Southern California Edison will allow 1,600 county elementary school students to see local performances of “The Nutcracker” this December.

The $25,000 award will help pay for the Channel Islands Ballet Company’s Arts for Youth program.

“This ballet has been an open door for many youths in Ventura County to become aware of theater,” said Clara Potes-Fellow, a spokeswoman for Edison International.

The grant focuses on schools whose makeup is at least 75% Latino. It will not only pay for children to attend the performance, but also will provide educational materials in Spanish and English for as many as 12,000 students.

The ballet company is among the first recipients of the $1-million grant program established by Edison International last year.

The school districts served by the youth program are: Oxnard, Ocean View, Ventura Unified, Hueneme and Fillmore.
