Gun Found Was Used to Kill Lawmaker

A gun found last month along a highway was used to kill a state senator nearly six months ago, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation concluded.

The agency made the finding Wednesday after firing test bullets from the gun and comparing them to the bullet that killed state Sen. Tommy Burks.

Byron (Low Tax) Looper has pleaded innocent to charges of murdering his political rival two weeks before last fall’s election.

Burks, a popular Democrat who held the seat for 20 years, was shot once in the head as he sat in his pickup truck at his farm Oct. 19. He was 58.

Looper, 34, the Republican property assessor in Putnam County who legally changed his middle name to (Low Tax), was arrested four days later.
