A Larger Footprint

Sandpiper Networks will announce today that it has upgraded its Footprint service for distributing content efficiently on the Internet. Footprint will now be able to accommodate streaming music and video, so-called authenticated content that is available only to certain users, and Web pages that are generated on the fly, said Leo Spiegel, president and chief executive of the Westlake Village start-up.

Footprint uses a private computer network to bypass traffic jams on the increasingly congested Internet. Sandpiper has signed up about 15 customers--including E! Online and WebRadio.com--since Footprint’s launch in September.

Spiegel also said Sandpiper will complete a second round of financing by the end of the month. The company expects to raise about $17 million from a combination of venture capital firms and strategic investors.
