Everyone has seen videos of developing embryos. But this astonishing special--the latest in the “Body Human” series by Louis H. Gorfain and Charles A. Bangert--takes the technology of peeking into the womb a step further. “Body Human 2000” follows various families who confront problems and issues related to conception and childbirth, including the stories of an infant born at 22 weeks gestation and a baby born with ambiguous genitalia. Another segment follows a New York couple who want to conceive but can’t because the husband is sterile. They undergo in-vitro fertilization, using donor sperm. The real excitement comes when the story switches to how the fertilized embryo develops. The pictures of a 40-day-old fetus are fascinating. Overall, this special is an interesting look at how medical technology and the study of fetal development have changed the way we view the miracle of birth. Since some of the discussion centers on sexuality, parents should use discretion.
