AOL Buys Calendar Service

America Online Inc., the world’s top provider of Internet services, said it acquired When Inc. in a move that allows AOL to offer free Internet calendar and event-planning services to its members. Dulles, Va.-based AOL paid an undisclosed amount of stock for Redwood City, Calif.-based When. Its easy-to-use calendar service, known as When.com, allows Internet users to keep track of their personal schedules online and to coordinate events with a fast-growing network of other online calendar-keepers. AOL shares surged $16.94, or 11%, to close at a record $166.94, on the New York Stock Exchange, with a big boost from revived speculation that AOL was in talks to buy CBS Corp.
