May Department Stores Co. said Robinsons-May Senior Vice President Jay H. Levitt will become president and chief executive of its Los Angeles-based department stores, succeeding David P. Mullen, 64, who is retiring after 11 years with the company. Levitt, who has been with May for 11 years, also served as general merchandise manager of sportswear and coats for Robinsons-May. Mullen had served as head of several of May’s department store divisions before assuming the Robinsons-May leadership in 1991. Before that, he had been CEO of both Filene’s and the now-defunct Goldwaters division. St. Louis-based May, which also operates Lord & Taylor, Hecht’s and Foley’s department stores, among others, also said it will spend $135 million to remodel and expand existing Robinsons-May stores and to add five new stores to the 55-store chain.
