School Property Sale Attracts Developers
As many as 50 developers from as far away as the Midwest have contacted the Simi Valley Unified School District to express interest in an as-yet-unlisted property the district plans to sell, an official said this week.
The board wants to sell the property at the intersection of Tapo Canyon Road and Alamo Street for no less than $10.5 million. The land sits in the heart of Simi Valley, across the street from City Hall and the police station.
The district can begin advertising the property next week, once an obligatory 60-day waiting period--established so public utilities have a chance to buy the property--is over, said Lowell Schultze, assistant superintendent of business services.
“Unless I get a letter from any public agency prior to April 12,” Schultze said, “what we’ll do is send out a request for bids. We have a whole file of potential buyers that are interested in the property.”
District officials say selling the land could make the district eligible to receive a share of $9.2 billion in state modernization funds. All of the district schools, with the exception of Wood Ranch Elementary, are eligible for the funds because they are over 25 years old.
The site is zoned residential with a senior housing element, Schultze said. Any other use would require the developer to seek an amendment to the city’s General Plan.
