Cleveland filed suit against the gun industry, becoming the sixth U.S. city seeking to recover municipal costs attributable to deaths and injuries caused by firearms. In the suit filed in state court in Cleveland, the city claims gun makers have failed to incorporate available safety features into their products and have violated product liability and negligence statutes. Meanwhile, attorneys who won a novel private suit against the industry in New York said they will file a national class-action suit against gun makers within two to three weeks. In the New York case, a federal jury in February found 15 of 25 gun makers at fault for a handful of shootings and ordered three gun makers to pay $520,000 in damages to one shooting victim. A federal judge in New York heard arguments from the gun makers on their move to overturn the verdict but did not issue a ruling or set a date for a decision.
