Eastern Europe
Re “The High Political Risk of ‘Moral’ Wars,” Opinion, March 4: Kevin Phillips is an insightful writer but he is dead wrong for blaming Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Soviet domination of post-World War II Eastern Europe. The Soviet army liberated Eastern Europe from Nazi Germany and then became the foreign oppressor.
The only way the U.S. would have stopped Soviet oppression was to use American ground troops to push the Soviets out of Eastern Europe at the risk of thousands of additional American casualties. That was never a plausible reality.
