Kosovo Refugees

Re Kosovo refugees being housed in Cuba: Just how far do we go to extend American generosity for the Kosovo refugees? Now Clinton wants to bring thousands of homeless war refugees to our military base in Guantanamo, Cuba, and take care of them until who knows when.

Does this offer of extended free room and board apply to any others? Say, for instance, homeless American citizens? After all, springtime in the Caribbean sure beats this cold and rainy Los Angeles weather.

* First Frank del Olmo (April 2), now Agustin Gurza (April 6). Where the world sees three American POWs, these folks see two Latinos and an Anglo. Isn’t this precisely the kind of deconstruction that is necessary for ethnic conflict? If the ethnic Albanians and Serbs thought of themselves as Yugoslavians first, perhaps they wouldn’t be killing each other. Do Del Olmo and Gurza wish to balkanize America too?

* Let us please have a moratorium on the use of the phrase “ethnic cleansing.” This is a horrible piece of Orwellian “Newspeak,” which means the opposite of the common sense understanding of the words. This is not cleansing by any fair use of the word. This is the vile, filthy slaughter of human beings.

Do not let this genocide be prettied up with euphemisms. Words have meanings and their corruption can corrupt our understanding, undermine our resolve and influence our actions.

* Does a double standard exist? The bombing of Muslim Iraq was postponed during Ramadan but the bombing of the Christian Serbs in Kosovo and Belgrade continued and intensified during the Easter season.

* In times of trouble when one saw Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman or Ronald Reagan, one was sure that each was thinking of America. In times of trouble when one sees Bill Clinton, one is sure that he is thinking of himself. How does a man like Clinton get elected? Shame on us all!
