Bob Peck, 53; British Stage and TV Actor

Bob Peck, 53, British stage and television actor who portrayed game warden Robert Muldoon in the 1993 blockbuster “Jurassic Park.” Born in Leeds in northern England, Peck was educated at Leeds College of Art. He worked on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theater and starred in more than 20 British television dramas. He was best known in Britain for his starring role as detective Richard Craven in the mid-1980s BBC series “Edge of Darkness.” Shot largely in an old Welsh mine, the series featured Peck investigating a secret nuclear reactor and earned him a Bafta best-actor award. The actor gained an international reputation with his appearance in Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur adventure “Jurassic Park.” On Sunday in London of cancer.

Madeleine Haas Russell, 84, heiress of Levi Strauss who contributed to campaigns against the death penalty and nuclear power. With her late brother, Russell, she established the Columbia Foundation to support the arts and various causes. One of her first grants, made shortly after World War II, was to the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists to help discourage the further use of nuclear weapons and energy. In later years, she worked for and financially supported Democratic candidates and causes, as well as campaigning for the abolition of the death penalty. Russell was a major benefactor of the San Francisco Opera, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Asian Art Museum. She was a great-grandniece of Strauss, the Bavarian immigrant who made the family fortune by inventing blue jeans for miners during the California Gold Rush. On April 2 in San Francisco.
