Pepperdine Tops UCI in Volleyball

Pepperdine, ranked third in the nation, defeated No. 13 UC Irvine, 15-8, 15-8, 15-10, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Saturday at Pepperdine.

George Roumain had 26 kills, Scott Wong had 20, and Chris Van Reusen had six blocks for Pepperdine (19-4, 14-4 in conference).

Donnie Rafter had 19 kills and Mike Rupp had 15, and Erick Helenihi had 11 blocks for Irvine (13-9, 10-7).

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 11, Claremont 1--Brandon Maciel’s grand slam highlighted a nine-run sixth for host Chapman (25-2), ranked fourth in the nation.

Winning pitcher Jeff Blitstein gave up one run, seven hits and no walks and struck out five in eight innings to improve to 9-0.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Biola 16-10, Concordia 1-3--Host Biola (28-8-3, 18-5) got seven strong innings from pitcher Ben Orr (7-3) and Chris Petinak and Alex Papadopulos each hit home runs for Biola.

In the second game, Chad VandenBerg (9-1), picked up a complete game, seven-inning victory, and Petinak hit his second home run of the day. David Munoz also hit a home run for Biola.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 7-7, Azusa Pacific 3-3--SCC (29-9, 10-0) scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie in the second game. Vanguard third baseman Val Vanaken had three hits and four RBIs and a run scored.

In the first game, Gretchen Brandt struck out seven and gave up seven hits and Erin Gomez and Heather Rogers each had two hits for SCC.

At the Southwestern Louisiana softball tournament:

Fullerton splits--Stephenie Little hit her 15th and 16th home runs for the Titans (25-17), who lost to tournament champion Southwestern Louisiana, 5-2, and defeated McNeese State, 6-3.

In nonconference softball:

San Diego 8-5, Concordia 0-0--San Diego (35-14) set a school record for victories in a single season.

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 4, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3--Sophomore David Matthew fought back from a 5-3 deficit in the third set to win, 7-6, clinching the victory for UCI (14-2, 4-0).

Freshman Chris Chung won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles to even the score, 3-3, for the host Anteaters before Matthew sealed the victory.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s track and field:

Concordia takes third--Concordia got first-place finishes from Fabio Mathais in the 1,500 meters (4 minutes 5.7 seconds), John Fowler in the 800 (1:53.5) and Bruce Hockless in the shotput (43 feet 4 1/2 inches).

Chris Gordon won the 100 hurdles in 17 seconds for SCC, which finished fourth with 31 points. Westmont won with 211 points and Fresno Pacific was second (192).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s track and field:

Mattson qualifies--Concordia’s Tricia Mattson won the 1,500 meters in 4:39.6 to qualify for the NAIA Nationals. Concordia finished fourth in the meet with 65 points.

Isis Gonzales won the 100 (12.5) and 200 (25.4) for third-place SCC, which had 139 points. Westmont won with 199 and Fresno Pacific was second with 157.

At the UC San Diego Collegiate Classic Invitational track and field meet:

Murray, Frichtel win events--UC Irvine’s Mike Murray won the men’s invitational 1,500 meters (3:55.79) and Robert Frichtel won the invitational 800 meters (1:54.08). Santosh Swamidass was second in the high jump at 6-3 1/4.

Tiffany Boykin won the women’s invitational 400 (56.9) and Kelly Hughes won the open 1,500 (4:55.21) and Anita Sampson was second in the long jump at 17-10 1/4 for UC Irvine.
