Art

By the turn of the century, most of the traditions practiced by Native Americans were well on their way to extinction. Hoping to partially document those lifestyles before they vanished, Edward S. Curtis in 1901 began a quest to photograph each tribe in America, a project that took 26 years and resulted in a 20-volume work, “The North American Indian.” Thirty-eight photographs from the 2,500-image collection can be seen in “Edward S. Curtis: Indians of the California Region,” which closes today at the Old Courthouse Museum, 211 W. Santa Ana Blvd., Santa Ana. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Free. (714) 834-3703.

“Rauschenberg in Transparency,” a collection of 15 constructions on view through Sunday at the Orange County Museum of Art, illustrates Ed Rauschenberg’s view of the nonstatic nature of art. The works invite viewers to to reconfigure and manipulate their meaning. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. daily through Sunday. 850 San Clemente Drive, Newport Beach. $4-$5. (949) 759-1122.
