Police Still Seek Clues in Shooting of Mayor
Police were still searching Friday for the assailant who shot and wounded Mayor Henry Gonzalez after he returned home from a council meeting this week.
Gonzalez remained at a Lynwood hospital in stable condition, recovering from a superficial wound to the back of his head.
South Gate police declined to discuss the details of the attack but friends and family members said the gunman was waiting for Gonzalez when he stepped out of his car at his home Tuesday night.
Police also refused to discuss a possible motive in the attack. But several Gonzalez colleagues suspect that the shooting may be linked to last month’s nasty political campaign.
Gov. Gray Davis called Gonzalez in the hospital Wednesday to express his support for the mayor.
