Cartoonist Roman Signs Deal for Feature Film

Studio City cartoon artist Phil Roman signed his first deal as an independent animator last week. He will be executive producer and creative consultant for “Cyber Garden,” a feature film that mixes live action with animation.

He will be in charge of creating the characters and supervising animation for the film, which is about a group of kids looking for their uncle inside a computer.

In February, Roman quit the North Hollywood animation company he founded, Film Roman, to start a small animation boutique in Studio City. Film Roman produces “The Simpsons” and “King of the Hill,” among other cartoons.

Roman says the $10-million “Cyber Garden” project is exactly what he was looking for.

“The story is all about fantasy worlds,” Roman said. “And that’s what I love about this business. We get to create something that doesn’t exist and make it believable.”

The film will begin production this summer in Vancouver, which is the headquarters of the film’s producer, Sodona Entertainment.
