Iraq said one person was killed and four injured when Western warplanes bombed targets in a “no-fly” zone in the north of the country. “Bombing led to martyrdom of a citizen and injuring of another four,” the Iraqi News Agency quoted a military spokesman as saying. The spokesman also said the planes patrolled areas in southern Iraq, “targeting service establishments and weapons sites.” Iraqi ground batteries opened fire at the planes. A statement from Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey said Turkish-based U.S. jet fighters bombed Iraqi air defenses in the northern zone after being targeted by antiaircraft fire. “Operation Northern Watch observed antiaircraft fire, posing a threat to coalition aircraft. Responding in self-defense, U.S. Air Force F-16CJ Falcons launched a high-speed anti-radiation missile on a radar site east of Mosul,” the Iraqi statement said.
