Vivendi, the large French utility, said it has completed its $6.2-billion tender offer to acquire the common stock of U.S. Filter Corp., the Palm Desert water-processing firm. As part of the deal, announced in March, about 174.4 million shares of U.S. Filter were tendered, the firm said. U.S. Filter has about 28,000 employees in 94 countries, while Vivendi has 235,000 employees.

* SSE Telecom Inc. of Fremont, Calif., a maker of satellite earth station components and systems, said it will fire about 67 employees, or 44% of its work force, to cut costs and fund marketing and development of new products.
