Democrat Bill Bradley picked up the first congressional endorsement of his presidential candidacy Friday from liberal Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone.

Wellstone, who briefly considered running himself for the Democratic nomination in 2000, has close ties to labor and farm activists who could help Bradley in Iowa, where the first caucus will be held.

Wellstone said he believes that Bradley, a former New Jersey senator, can defeat Vice President Al Gore for the Democratic nomination despite Gore’s support among party leaders and polls that show Bradley trailing.

Wellstone has been one of the harshest critics of the Clinton administration among congressional Democrats. He said he likes Bradley’s support for national health insurance.
