San Jose del Cabo, Baja

It’s a sleepy town, and you go there if you want to be a lump on the beach or to fish. I caught a hammerhead shark--it was 5 feet long--and it took two hours to reel it in. My husband was sure that I snagged my line on a rock or the reef. The guides who take you out fishing don’t pamper you or show you how to hold the pole or anything. It’s a very manly, Hemingway experience.

Discovery: There’s a really great restaurant where they cook what you catch. It’s called Damiana’s and it’s the only place that I would eat weird foods, like garlic octopus. We ate part of my hammerhead shark there and took the rest home.
