* Brazil’s former Central Bank President Francisco Lopes was arrested after he refused to sign an affidavit backing his testimony disputing allegations of income tax evasion and favoritism. Lopes was escorted from the room in which a Senate commission is investigating charges related to the rescue of Banco Marka and Banco Fonte Cindam, bailouts that occurred while Lopes was Central Bank president.

* Detroit sued the gun industry for more than $100 million for “the havoc wreaked on the city” by firearms. The lawsuit was brought against 30 manufacturers, distributors and sellers. Atlanta, Cleveland and Chicago are among those filing similar suits.

* Mattel Inc. paid Chairwoman and Chief Executive Jill E. Barad $4.8 million last year, more than double her 1997 pay of $2.4 million excluding a special options grant, according to a proxy filing. At the same time, the world’s largest maker of toys said it fell short of earnings goals and gave no annual bonuses to top executives last year. The company recently announced plans to lay off 3,000 workers as it struggles to cut costs and revive profit.
