THE WEEK AHEAD

Share

TODAY-THURSDAY VS. TORONTO

* Schedule: 7 tonight; 7:30 p.m. Wednesday; 7 p.m. Thursday.

* Television: Fox Sports West tonight and Wednesday; Fox Sports West 2 Thursday.

* Radio: KLAC (570 AM) tonight and Wednesday; KIK-FM (94.3) Thursday.

* Pitching matchups: Omar Olivares (2-1, 1.77 ERA) vs. Pat Hentgen (0-1, 7.08) Tuesday; Tim Belcher (1-1, 8.53) vs. David Wells (3-1, 3.42) Wednesday; Ken Hill (0-1, 4.76) vs. Roy Halladay (2-0, 0.00) Thursday.

* Last week’s series: The Blue Jays swept the Angels at Skydome, hitting six home runs in the three games--none by cleanup hitter Carlos Delgado, who hit 38 last year. Toronto can beat the Angels with speed, too; leadoff hitter Shannon Stewart has nine stolen bases, three more than the Angels’ team total.

* Keys for Toronto: Roger Clemens wanted out because he thought the Blue Jays couldn’t win, but any team can win with consistent pitching. Hentgen, the 1996 Cy Young Award winner, is the only weak link at the moment in a rotation that features Wells, who pitched a perfect game last year, and young guns Halladay, 21, Kelvim Escobar, 23 and Chris Carpenter, 24.

FRIDAY-MONDAY

VS. CHICAGO

* Schedule: 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 5 p.m. Sunday; 1 p.m. Monday.

* Television: Channel 9 Saturday.

* Radio: KLAC 570 all four games.

* Last year’s series: The Angels lost six of 11 games, with the White Sox hitting 11 home runs. The players responsible for seven of those home runs--Albert Belle, Mike Cameron, Wil Cordero and the Angels’ Charlie O’Brien--no longer play for Chicago.

* Keys for Chicago: Shrewd trades. When the White Sox traded veteran pitchers Wilson Alvarez, Danny Darwin and Roberto Hernandez to the San Francisco Giants in 1997, they got six prospects, including starting shortstop Mike Caruso and relievers Bobby Howry and Keith Foulke. When the Sox traded pitcher Jim Abbott to the Angels in 1995, they got four prospects, including pitchers John Snyder and Bill Simas and outfielder McKay Christensen, who jumped from Class A to the majors this season.

HISTORY LESSON

A look back at this week in Angel history:

April 29, 1974: Infielder Dave Chalk ties a team record with two triples in a 7-2 victory over Boston.

April 30, 1998: The Angels finish one of their best Aprils in history with a 7-2 victory at Boston, matching a team record with 15 victories during the month.
