Injury-Prone Nation
In 1995, some 162,000 children were treated in hospital emergency rooms for baseball-related injuries, according to statistics gathered by the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Here are more numbers about injury in America:
* Sports-related injuries suffered by older Americans increased by 54% between 1990 and 1996.
* Injury prompts 54% of all visits to emergency departments by children ages 5 to 14.
* Sixty-five percent of all visits to the emergency department by males ages 15 to 24 are related to injury.
* Falls are the leading cause of injury.
* “Open wound” is the leading diagnosis for injury-related visits to the emergency department.
* Each year in the U.S., about 2.6 million people are hospitalized for injuries, and about 60 million seek medical attention or suffer at least one day of restricted activity because of an injury.
