The city of Rancho Mirage executed an agreement with Los Angeles-based J.H. Snyder Co. last week for Snyder to develop a $50-million shopping and entertainment complex on a 30-acre site at the northwest corner of Bob Hope Drive and Highway 111.

The project will be named “The River” for a waterway that will wind through the development. The complex will be designed by the Jerde Partnership International of Venice and Lifescapes International of Newport Beach. Construction is to begin early next year and will be completed by fall, officials said.

The development will include a 75,000-square-foot theater complex, 25,000 square feet of restaurant space, a 25,000-square-foot book and music store and about 100,000 square feet of retail shops. The theaters will be operated by Edwards Theatres Circuit, which is a partner in the project.

The city’s goal in developing the site is to create a “quality project that stresses pedestrian orientation and is a gathering place for the city,” said Barry Foster, economic development director for Rancho Mirage.

Jerde and Lifescapes collaborated on the design of the Bellagio hotel-resort in Las Vegas. Jerde also designed Universal CityWalk and San Diego’s Horton Plaza.

Snyder’s current projects include the Howard Hughes Entertainment Center in Westchester, as well as a shopping and entertainment center at La Brea Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, in partnership with Regent Properties. Snyder is known for developing a number of high-profile office projects in Los Angeles, including the Water Garden in Santa Monica.
