Accelerated Networks Joins ATM Consortium

Share

Accelerated Networks in Moorpark announced it has joined the ATM Local Telephony Alliance, an industry consortium that promotes the use of next-generation ATM technology.

Known as Asynchronous Transfer Mode, ATM technology transfers data in “packets”--a system that allows for multiple uses simultaneously and is always turned on.

The network architecture uses switches to establish an end-to-end connection and allows Internet connections up to 100 times faster than today’s 56.6-kilobyte-per-second dial-up modem.

Telephone carriers are beginning to install powerful ATM switches to speedily deliver voice, data and video.

ALTA’s mission is to accelerate the development and deployment of ATM-based local exchange networks.

“With industry and technology changing at an explosive rate, service providers are looking for assurances that the systems they buy today will remain operable and inter-operable well into the future,” said Fima Vaisman, assistant vice president of marketing at Accelerated Networks.

Privately held Accelerated Networks markets products designed for local access providers. These systems enable providers to offer bundled voice and data services over a single access line.

“The goals of ALTA fit hand-in-glove with Accelerated’s philosophy that a system based on accepted industry standards not only guarantees an open roadway into the future, it also maximizes infrastructure flexibility and reduces capital costs,” Vaisman said.

ALTA was founded in June by a group of next-generation service providers and telecommunications equipment vendors.
