An advocacy organization that assists abused children is giving away new backpacks and $100 vouchers to 200 youngsters at the Westminster Mall on Aug. 28.

The children, most of whom live away from their families in foster or group homes, will shop with their mentors from Court Appointed Special Advocates, the organizers of the back-to-school event.

“Going back to school has become a rite of passage,” said Rose Carey, the director of community relations at CASA. “We want to relieve some of the anxiety about fitting in.”

CASA has 350 volunteers working with about 500 children who have been removed from their families because of abuse.
