* Re “Mission College Gets Lesson in Local Politics,” July 26.

Mission College’s relationship with its service community was shattered by the lack of leadership shown by its past administration. This situation has now been compounded by a majority of the board of trustees who are not willing to acknowledge the concerns of this San Fernando Valley community. Once again, downtown interests are telling Valley residents what’s best for them.

Board Vice President Georgia Mercer, our so-called Valley representative, has failed us. I have news for you, Ms. Mercer. Tony Cardenas, Richard Alarcon and Alex Padilla are just doing their jobs in regard to the Mission College presidential selection. This is how politics works in this part of our Valley: We are experiencing family-community oriented politics. Mercer was obviously not around when our communities overwhelmingly supported the three elected officials she now wants to back off. These three elected officials have been able to build a sense of trust in the communities they serve because of their commitment to unity and responsibility.

Alarcon, Cardenas and Padilla are getting involved because their constituents have asked them to do so.

I have hope and complete trust in our elected officials and the members of the Valley Coalition for a Responsive Community College District. Electing a permanent president of the stature of Saeed Ali will definitely benefit the students. We need a strong leader who will work on expanding the college offerings and facilities. As Vice President Al Gore has repeatedly stated, “Nuestras familias merecen lo mejor,” (Our families deserve the best).
