Bride, 78, and Groom, 90, Trade Vows at Jewish Home

When you find something you like, don’t hesitate to go after it.

That’s unsolicited advice on romance from Joe Jaye, who at age 90 married his 78-year-old sweetheart, Edith Fishman, on Sunday afternoon, less than two months after the couple met at the Los Angeles Jewish Home for the Aging.

Edith had been married 54 years and raised three children before her first husband died about four years ago. Then came an anxious transition from her Encino home to Eisenberg Village at the Jewish Home in February.

But after making the move, it didn’t take long for Edith’s social life to pick up.

Joe, who has two children from a previous marriage, said he noticed Edith a couple of times before he asked her on a dinner date in late June. And since then, the couple has been virtually inseparable.

“I’m not a loner,” Joe said. “I want tender, loving care, and she’s a tender, loving woman.”

The blushing bride returns the compliment, saying her man “has a great sense of humor,” a quality that attracted her right away, in addition to his gentle and kind manner.

More than 200 people--including nearly 80 family members representing four generations--witnessed Edith in her elegant lavender dress exchanging vows with Joe under the Chuppah, or Jewish bridal canopy.

But don’t ask the couple to explain exactly why they were bitten by the love bug.

Call it electricity, fate or a nice smile.

“I don’t know how to put it any plainer,” the groom said. “It just happened. We couldn’t resist each other.”

As for the honeymoon, the couple said they plan to stay put and sleep in.
