9 Firefighters Treated for Inhaling Smoke in Condominium Blaze
Nine firefighters were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation Monday after battling a blaze that damaged the seventh floor of a 14-story residential building downtown, authorities said.
The three-alarm blaze at the Cooper Arms condominium building was reported late Monday morning, said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Rick Pillsbury. Six firefighters were treated at a local hospital and released. The others were expected to be released Monday night.
Neither the cause of the blaze nor the amount of the damage was immediately known.
Firefighters, including crews from Long Beach and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, doused the blaze in a seventh-floor unit in about 45 minutes, then worked to vent smoke from the building, evacuate occupants and search for possible victims, Pillsbury said.
He called the Cooper Arms, at Ocean Boulevard and Linden Avenue, a “beautiful old historic building.”
