Boy Scouts Ruling

Re “N.J. High Court Tells Boy Scouts to Admit Gays I am a senior in high school and an active member in the Girl Scouts. I have been a member for 12 years and have learned numerous things. One of the most important is to accept different beliefs and cultures. To not allow someone to participate in something solely based on his or her sexual orientation is not only wrong but is purely based on fear and ignorance.

A wonderful part of being involved in the Girl Scouts is the diversity of people involved. If more time was spent raising children to accept different walks of life, rather than showing them that discrimination is an acceptable choice, this world would be a better place. If I could ask George Davidson, the Boy Scouts’ lawyer, one question, it would be this: “What does the Boy Scouts have to gain by not allowing James Dale to participate?”

As a former Boy Scout who, while camping, was sexually approached by a homosexual scout leader, I react with alarm to the idea that the Scouts might be forced by the courts to accept gay members. Will the Girl Scouts be forced to have male camp leaders? The call in the Scouting oath to be “morally straight” could not be more clear, and gays can take it, leave it or start their own group.
