Donated Cars

Share

As a noted auctioneer and appraiser of classic and collector cars for over 20 years, I am glad to see The Times has finally brought the recent wave of vehicle donation scams to light (Aug. 1). I was contacted several years ago by a foundation of faith in San Francisco desiring my services to liquidate automobile inventories accumulated through donation. When I informed the foundation that donated vehicles resold before a specified amount of time would put the taxpayer’s appraisal (and write-off) in jeopardy, I was excused as a potential resale source.

I have appraised hundreds of cars for individuals, government, banks and museums. I would recommend that anyone thinking of donating a vehicle first consult an accountant. Vehicle donations will not benefit every taxpayer. Carefully investigate the charity, how and when it will turn the donation into cash and what percentage of proceeds it expects to realize. Even the most notable charities can receive a fraction of any “appraised” value, losing money to steep transportation, reconditioning, handling and sale commissions.
