City Manager Makinney Tells Plans to Retire

Share

Charles F. Makinney, the second city manager to serve here since incorporation in 1984, has announced plans to retire.

Makinney, who served two years as city manager, has not yet set a date for his departure from the $125,000-a-year post. However, Makinney said he would not leave before the city begins a $15-million renovation of Santa Monica Boulevard. That project is scheduled to start at the end of this month.

Rumors that Makinney, 56, was planning to resign had been circulating for weeks in City Hall, and Makinney attempted to stop them last week. In an e-mail message delivered to all city hall workers, Makinney said he was indeed planning on retiring but that he would not leave the city “in the lurch” by leaving abruptly.

He could not be reached for comment Tuesday about his decision.

Before becoming city manager, Makinney served as both interim and assistant city manager.

Before coming to West Hollywood, Makinney was director of the management services branch for the Police Department in Portland, Ore.
