Lucent to Buy Xedia

Lucent Technologies Inc., the No. 1 phone equipment maker, agreed to buy Xedia Corp. for $246 million in stock to gain products that let businesses secure their communications on the Internet. Lucent will pay 3.86 million shares for the closely held company, based in Acton, Mass. Xedia’s routers are used by large corporations and Internet access providers to set up private lines on public data networks. Lucent shares rose $2.13 to close at $65.88 on the NYSE.
