DODGERS / THE WEEK AHEAD

Share

TONIGHT-WEDNESDAY

VS. FLORIDA

* Schedule: 7 tonight; 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

* Television: Fox Sports West 2, both games.

* Radio: KXTA (1150) and KWKW (1330), both games.

* Last series: The Marlins won two of three games in May. The Marlins won the first game on Bruce Aven’s pinch-hit grand slam off reliever Alan Mills and the third game with the help of three homers off Chan Ho Park. A strong pitching effort by Kevin Brown in which he gave up only three hits in eight innings gave the Dodgers their only victory of the series.

* About the Marlins: Florida had won seven in a row, matching their season-high winning streak, before losing to San Diego on Saturday. Florida still is battling with Montreal to avoid last place in the National League East. Rookies such as Alex Gonzalez and Aven continue to play key roles. Former Cal State Fullerton standout Mark Kotsay has been hot lately, batting .333 in 90 at-bats. Kotsay, in his second season as the regular right fielder, has been playing occasionally at first base. Alex Fernandez (6-7, 2.98 ERA) will miss his scheduled start this week because of an inflamed rotator cuff.

FRIDAY-SUNDAY

AT PHILADELPHIA

* Schedule: 4:30 Friday; 4 p.m. Saturday, 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

* Television: KTLA, all three games.

* Radio: KXTA (1150) and KWKW (1330), all three games.

* Last series: The Dodgers won two of three at home in June. The Dodgers won the rubber game, 3-2, behind solid pitching by Brown, who retired 17 in a row at one point, and two home runs from Eric Karros. Curt Schilling held the Dodgers to three hits through seven innings in a 2-1 Phillie victory in the opener.

* About the Phillies: Philadelphia is still well behind Atlanta and New York in the NL East and won’t be helped by Schilling (14-5, 3.49) going on the 15-day disabled list Friday. Right-hander Robert Person (7-3), however, is 6-1 over his last eight starts. The Phillies continue to rely heavily on their bats, and Bobby Abreu and Ron Gant have been hitting particularly well recently. Gant had one recent eight-game stretch with four home runs and eight runs scored.
