Key Date Altered in Anwar Charges

Police said that they rewrote a sodomy charge against former Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim, changing the year of the incident from 1992 to 1993, after discovering that the building where the crime allegedly took place had not yet been built in 1992. The testimony by senior assistant police commissioner Musa Hassan came on the 46th day of the trial before the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital. It appeared to corroborate the defense’s contention that the sodomy charge was rewritten after Anwar’s lawyers had pointed out the inconsistency in what they call trumped-up charges that sparked anti-government protests after Anwar was indicted in September.
