Remarks Over Fees Called Inflammatory

Share

I am aghast at Steven R. Kellman’s irresponsible reply regarding application fees charged to tenants (“Rental Roundtable,” Aug. 15).

Did you think it through when you said, “Another problem arises when the less than honest landlord takes the opportunity to accept many applications (and fees) from tenants with doubtful credit simply to profit from these credit check fees. Some landlords simply pocket the fees without actually running a credit check.”

How can a landlord possibly know whether the credit worthiness is “doubtful” without the actual credit report?

How can he “profit” after having to pay anywhere from $24 to $30 per credit check?

It is this type of inflammatory, prejudiced comment that creates the antagonistic and adversarial relationship and sets up the attitude of the tenant toward the landlord.
