Chen on Record-Setting Pace

Share

Chin-Feng Chen is within range of becoming the first player to hit at least 30 home runs and steal at least 30 bases in the same season in the California League.

The San Bernardino left fielder already has stolen 30 bases, and has 26 home runs through Sunday. Only five minor league players have reached the double milestone in the last decade.

Chen, a native of Taiwan, is batting .319 with 112 runs batted in. His RBI total is a club record and leads the league.

The Dodgers signed Chen in January after he batted .444 in the Asian Games in Bangkok.

Stampede relief pitcher Bill Everly has 32 saves through Sunday and is only two away from the California League record, as well as the Dodger minor league record. Joe Jacobsen set the minor league club record of 34 at Vero Beach in 1995.

The Stampede (34-24 in the second half) is assured of a spot in the league playoffs. The Stampede has clinched the wild-card spot from the Southern Division, but still has a chance to win the second-half title.

Albuquerque (61-65)--Outfielder Brent Cookson has had four home runs in his first seven games since returning to the lineup after coming off the disabled list Aug. 11. Cookson was 11 for 27 (.407) during that stretch.

Gavin Osteen (5-7) and Jeff Kubenka (4-4) have been pitching well recently for the Dukes. Osteen, the son of Dodger pitching coach Claude Osteen, was 5-0 with a 2.96 ERA in a recent six-game stretch. Kubenka pitched 20 2/3 scoreless innings from July 2 through Aug. 17, picking up four saves. Kubenka picked up his eighth save Sunday.

San Antonio (31-30)--Right-hander Eric Gagne leads the Texas League in strikeouts with 153 through Sunday. He also ranks second in the league with a 2.71 ERA. He has struck out 10 or more batters in five games this season.

Outfielder Ramon Moreta is batting .305 with 41 RBIs, but his 17-game hitting streak was snapped Saturday.
